Matemwe Lodge is perched on an outcrop overlooking a swallow, coral – fringed lagoons on the quiet northeastern coast of Zanzibar Island. The lodge is situated beside an 11 mile-long beach near the village of Matemwe in the northeast of Zanzibar Island. Opposite Matemwe Lodge, there is Mnemba Island a diving haven. The lodge is approximately a 30 minute drive away from Mnemba Island a world renowned coral reef providing some of the most spectacular diving and snorkeling experiences in the world. Mnemba Island offers high chances of seeing turtles, wild dolphins and colorful reef fish that dart around the coral.

Generally the whole east coast experiences tidal receding up to a kilometer at low tide, the beach “Matemwe Beach” is affected by seaweed between September and November.
Matemwe Lodge is Zanzibar’s original eco-chic beach situated just opposite the Mnemba Island Marine Conservation Area which is a home to the green turtles and more than 600 species of coral fish. The lodge has 12 vibrantly furnished guest villas and 2 swimming pools perched on a coral rag cliff.
Style and character of Matemwe Lodge
On arrival at Matemwe Lodge you will be struck by the luxuriously flowering tropical gardens and the Vibrant Africa décor and prints that match the dazzling flowers and the impossibly blue sea.
The lodge’s structures perfectly complement with the breezy and the surrounding nature, the lodge features open-sided thatched structures, 2 organically – shaped pools and secluded seating areas, a bar and spa set within the riotous foliage. The lodge takes the Environmental Principles serious and much of the furniture used at the lodge is made from recovered driftwood and the hot water and electricity is supplied by solar power.

Rooms at Matemwe Lodge
Guest rooms at Matemwe Lodge are situated northwards along the coral ridge, the lodge has a total of 12 spacious and independent suites with deep verandahs strung with double hammocks. Thick strands of palms and pines around the rooms shield them from each other and create a private cocoon.
Inside the rooms, they have high beamed ceiling and louvred blinds circulate cooling air around the sitting area and bedroom which makes air – conditioning unnecessary.
The décor in these rooms is bright and breezy consisting of woven rugs, brass0 studded Zanzibar Chests, handmade furniture and platform beds dressed in bright kikois (Sarongs). These rooms also have en-suite bathrooms with vast double sinks, walk –in showers and separate bathtubs. Some rooms have a mezzanine level of extra beds and 2 of the rooms have a private plunge pool.

Meals served at Matemwe Lodge are a mix of gourmet-style cooking and traditional Zanzibar Cuisine with loads of seafood
- Breakfast at Matemwe Lodge is a smorgasbord of tropical fruit, cereals, mini croissants, yoghurt and eggs.
- Lunch is buffet-style with a range of salads and light seafood dishes. Dinner is a three-course menu featuring grilled meats, hearty stews or light-caught fish.
Note: All the food is sourced locally and ethically meaning no net or spear caught fish. There is always a vegetation Option and Fridays are barbecue night and a spoiling Swahili dinner is served on Sunday.

Child Ages
Matemwe Lodge is a wonder escape destination for families with children aged 5 and older, children under the age of 5 are also welcomed to the Beach House which has a private chef and they are not allowed in the main restaurant. Guests aged 5 to 15 can be accommodated in the lodge’s suites at reduced rates.
