Katasiha Fort & Caves | Bunyoro Heritage Site in Western Uganda

Katasiha fort and caves : The Katasiha Fort and caves are found in Hoima district, along the Hoima-Biiso-Butiaba road inside Miika Eco resort. It is about 3 kilometers from Hoima town. The fort and cave were constructed by Omukama Kabalega, the then King of Bunyoro in 1894 as a hiding place and defense point against the British colonial rule. The caves are of historical importance to the Banyoro people. River Bigajuuka which was before the fort was used extensively as a defense line before getting to the King’s army. The fort and caves was used to fight the British after he abandoned his palace at Mparo.

History

After the British introduced colonial rule in Uganda. Omukama Kabalega resisted and put up a fight at Katasiha where he mobilized his army to dig trenches of up to 8 feet tall in protective enclaves. The fort was constructed in one month. Kabalega chose Katasiha due to its strategic location and the cave which helped him move his army from one post to another through the tunnels. River Bigajuuka provide the first line of defense.

Unfortunately, Kabalega was defeated by the British who had superior weaponry and outnumbered him when they joined forces with the Baganda and Sudanese. Omukama Kabalega continued fighting many battles against the British around the fort and caves.

To avoid a head on collision, Kabalega retreated to Budongo forest where he waged a guerrilla warfare.

The British occupied the fort and caves in 1893 and used them as a military base for running operations against the Kabalega resistance.

Kabalega’s chiefs Kikukule and Ireta attacked and burnt down the fort in 1898 as a resistance move. The fort was however rebuilt in 1900 as the new headquarters of Bunyoro district. The fort was later abandoned in 1967 when the district moved to its new offices.

Currently, what remains is a long trench partially filled with soil running in different directions. No one can tell the size of the underground tunnel because the entrance was blocked many years ago.

Mparo tombs

Mparo was named the capital of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom in 1872 and it is also where Omukama Kabalega was laid to rest in 1923. The tombs are located 4km from Hoima town along Masindi road. The tombs are of great historical importance to the Banyoro people and those who wish to learn about the history can visit the tombs with an experienced tour guide.

Butiaba

Butiaba is a fishing village located on the shores of Lake Albert. It is also believed that the lake is where the remains of the SS Coryndon steamer wrecked during the 1962 floods. Get to see how fishing takes place, the preservation methods and how the community benefits from this activity.

 Bunyoro Kingdom

Take a cultural tour around Bunyoro kingdom which has some interesting sites to visit, beliefs and customs one can study about. Visit the royal palace in Hoima where the Omukama sits. While at the palace, get to see the traditional nine legged throne embedded in leopard skin. Get to also visit the community and know about the lifestyle of the Banyoro.

Get to visit the famous church located 2km from Hoima town along Butiaba. The church is a beautiful serene site especially in the morning and for those who want to pray, do not miss the Sunday prayers.
