9 Days Namibia Safari to Sossusvlei, Swakopmund & Etosha
This nine-day Namibia safari connects the country’s defining desert, Atlantic coast and wildlife landscapes while using light aircraft transfers to reduce long overland journeys.
Overview
Namibia rewards travellers who are willing to cover considerable ground, but this itinerary takes a different approach.
Rather than spending several days driving between major destinations, it uses light aircraft transfers to connect Windhoek, Sossusvlei, Swakopmund and the Etosha region, leaving more time for the places themselves.
The journey begins in Windhoek before moving into the Namib Desert for two nights around Sossusvlei.
Here, the focus is on the extraordinary dune landscape, with a guided excursion to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, time for photography and opportunities for guided desert activities.
From the desert, the itinerary turns towards the Atlantic coast. Two nights in Swakopmund provide time for a guided quad-bike experience and a full-day excursion to Sandwich Harbour, where desert dunes descend towards the Atlantic and an internationally important wetland supports substantial birdlife.
The final three nights are based at Ongava, on the southern boundary of Etosha National Park.
This gives the safari a clear wildlife focus, with game drives in Ongava and Etosha and opportunities to observe animals around waterholes, open plains and the margins of the Etosha Pan.
The result is a compact introduction to three very different sides of Namibia. You move from immense desert landscapes to a fog-influenced Atlantic coastline and then into one of the country’s best-known wildlife regions.
The Namib Sand Sea is itself recognised by UNESCO as an exceptional coastal desert shaped by extensive dune fields and fog.

Destinations to Visit
1. Windhoek
Namibia’s capital is the starting point for many journeys through the country. Rather than treating Windhoek as a major safari destination, this itinerary uses it as a practical first stop, allowing you to arrive, rest and prepare for the light aircraft journey into the Namib Desert.
2. Sossusvlei
Sossusvlei sits within the Namib-Naukluft region and is surrounded by some of the Namib’s most recognisable dunes.
The landscape is defined by enormous orange-red dunes, dry clay pans and the remnants of the Tsauchab River system.
The nearby Deadvlei is particularly striking, where the dark remains of ancient camel thorn trees stand against a pale clay pan surrounded by dunes.
Early morning is especially valuable here because lower temperatures make walking more comfortable and the changing light brings out the contours of the dunes.
3. Swakopmund
Swakopmund occupies an unusual position between desert and ocean. Its cooler Atlantic climate and distinctive historic architecture make it a natural contrast to the interior desert.
The town also works well as a base for coastal excursions. From here, the itinerary heads towards Walvis Bay and Sandwich Harbour, where the desert meets a highly productive coastal wetland.
4. Etosha National Park and Ongava
Etosha is centred around a vast salt pan and the surrounding semi-arid landscapes, where wildlife concentrates around available water sources.
Elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, springbok, black rhinos and other species can be encountered, although sightings remain dependent on season, water availability and animal movements.
Ongava Game Reserve lies alongside Etosha’s southern boundary and provides an additional setting for wildlife viewing.
The reserve is particularly associated with its rhino conservation work, adding an important conservation dimension to the final stage of the safari.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Windhoek
Your Namibia safari begins when you arrive at Hosea Kutako International Airport, where a Petnah Africa Tours representative will meet you and arrange your transfer to Windhoek.
Depending on your arrival time, there may be an opportunity for a short city tour during the afternoon.
Otherwise, the day is intentionally easy, giving you time to settle in before the journey into the desert begins.
Overnight at Hotel Heinitzburg
Day 2: Fly to the Namib Desert
After breakfast, transfer to Eros Airport for your light aircraft flight into the Namib Desert.
As the aircraft leaves Windhoek behind, the landscape changes progressively from mountains and gravel plains to increasingly arid terrain.
Subject to weather and operational conditions, the flight provides an unusual perspective on the scale and remoteness of Namibia’s desert.
On arrival at the private airstrip serving your lodge, you will be met and transferred to &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge.
After lunch and some time to settle in, head out with local guides for your first desert experience.
The afternoon’s activity depends on conditions but can include a scenic drive focusing on the geology, vegetation and wildlife adapted to this extremely arid environment.
Overnight at &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge
Day 3: Sossusvlei and Deadvlei
Start early for an excursion towards Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, when the temperatures are cooler and the morning light begins to shape the dunes.
The route takes you into one of the Namib’s most distinctive landscapes, where immense dunes surround pale clay pans at the end of the Tsauchab River system.
There will be opportunities for photography and guided walks, with the possibility of climbing part of a dune for broader views across the surrounding desert.
Return to the lodge around midday for lunch and time to rest during the warmer part of the day.
The afternoon is more flexible. Depending on your interests and the conditions, you can choose from activities such as a guided desert experience, hiking, e-biking, or another scenic drive.
After dark, the desert provides an excellent setting for stargazing. With very little artificial light around the lodge, the night sky becomes an important part of the experience.
Overnight at &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge
Day 4: Fly to Swakopmund
After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for a light aircraft flight northwest towards Swakopmund.
The scenery changes dramatically during the flight as the interior desert gives way to the cooler Atlantic coast.
On arrival, you will be met by your representative and transferred to your hotel.
After lunch and some time to rest, head out for the included guided quad-bike excursion in the coastal dunes.
Following a safety briefing and introduction to the vehicles, you will follow your guide along permitted dune routes near Swakopmund.
The experience combines active exploration with an opportunity to appreciate how dramatically the desert landscape changes near the coast.
Return to your hotel for dinner and an evening at leisure.
Overnight at Hansa Hotel
Day 5: Sandwich Harbour and the Atlantic Coast
Today’s excursion takes you south towards Walvis Bay and onward by 4×4 to Sandwich Harbour.
The landscape becomes increasingly striking as high dunes approach the Atlantic Ocean.
Access and the precise route are influenced by tides, weather and local conditions, so your guide may adjust the excursion accordingly. Where beach access is restricted, elevated dune viewpoints provide an alternative way to experience the landscape.
Sandwich Harbour is more than a dramatic meeting point between sand and sea. It is an internationally recognised wetland and an important habitat for coastal and migratory birds.
The wider area supports substantial numbers of waterbirds, making this an especially worthwhile day for photographers and birders as well as landscape enthusiasts.
There will be opportunities to stop for photography and appreciate the changing relationship between ocean, dunes and wetland. Marine wildlife sightings may also occur during the excursion, although these cannot be guaranteed.
Any walking component is optional and the day’s activities will be adapted to the conditions.
Return to Swakopmund later in the afternoon and spend the evening at leisure.
Overnight at Hansa Hotel
Day 6: Fly to Ongava and Begin Your Wildlife Safari
After breakfast, transfer to Swakopmund Airport for your light aircraft flight north towards Ongava.
The changing landscape below takes you from the Atlantic coastal desert towards the drier savannah of northern Namibia.
On arrival at Ongava Airstrip, you will be met and transferred to the lodge.
After lunch and time to settle in, head out on your first guided safari excursion. Depending on the day’s conditions and arrangements, this may take place within Ongava Game Reserve or in neighbouring Etosha National Park.
Ongava is particularly well known for its rhino conservation work, while the surrounding region supports a broader range of wildlife.
Your guide will determine the route according to wildlife movements, access and prevailing conditions.
Return around sunset for dinner and an evening at the lodge.
Overnight at Ongava Lodge
Day 7: Explore Etosha National Park
Spend the day exploring the Etosha region on morning and afternoon game drives.
Etosha’s wildlife viewing is strongly influenced by water. During drier periods, animals concentrate around available waterholes, creating useful opportunities to observe interactions between different species.
At other times of year, rainfall can transform the landscape, change animal movements and bring different birdlife into the park.
Your guide will interpret tracks, behaviour and habitat while searching for species such as elephant, lion, giraffe, zebra, springbok and rhino.
The vast Etosha Pan itself is part of the experience. Its immense scale and pale surface create a visual environment very different from the red dunes of Sossusvlei or the Atlantic coastline visited earlier in the journey.
Overnight: Ongava Lodge
Day 8: Etosha and Ongava
Continue your wildlife viewing with morning and afternoon activities in Ongava and Etosha.
The two environments complement each other. Etosha provides the scale and variety of a major national park, while Ongava offers a private reserve setting with a particular focus on wildlife and conservation.
Depending on the lodge programme and conditions, additional activities may include a night game drive, guided walking experience or a community visit. These experiences are subject to availability and the rules governing the relevant area.
Take time between activities to rest at the lodge and enjoy the surroundings before your final departure the following day.
Overnight at Ongava Lodge
Day 9: Fly Back to Windhoek and Depart
Depending on your onward flight schedule, there may be an opportunity for a final morning game drive at Ongava.
After breakfast, transfer to Ongava Airstrip for your light aircraft flight back to Eros Airport in Windhoek.
On arrival, a Petnah Africa Tours representative will transfer you to Hosea Kutako International Airport for your onward flight.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is this itinerary suitable for first-time visitors to Namibia?
Yes. The route covers three of Namibia’s defining environments without requiring the traveller to spend most of the trip on the road. It is particularly suited to travellers who value comfort, photography, wildlife and efficient transfers.
2. Why use light aircraft transfers instead of driving between destinations?
Namibia is vast, and overland journeys between major destinations can consume substantial portions of a travel day. The light aircraft transfers in this itinerary reduce those long transfers and create more time for activities and relaxation at each destination.
3. What wildlife can I expect to see in Etosha?
Potential sightings include elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, springbok, rhinos, and other species. Sightings are never guaranteed, and the experience varies according to season, rainfall, water availability, and animal movements.
4. Is Sandwich Harbour suitable for photography?
Very much so. The combination of dunes, Atlantic Ocean, lagoon, salt flats, and birdlife provides a broad range of subjects. Tides and weather can affect access, so the exact route and viewpoints may change on the day.
5. What should I expect from the desert climate?
Conditions can vary considerably between the desert interior and the Atlantic coast. Sossusvlei can become very hot during the day, while Swakopmund is moderated by the cold Benguela Current and can feel considerably cooler.
Layered clothing and sun protection are useful, while specific packing advice should take your travel dates into account.
