Overview
The journey begins in Windhoek before heading west by light aircraft to the Namib Desert and the dunes of Sossusvlei.
From there, the route continues north through the rugged landscapes of Damaraland before finishing around Etosha National Park and the private Ongava Reserve.
The itinerary deliberately uses light aircraft connections between regions, reducing some of the long overland transfers that can make a Namibia trip tiring for families.
Each destination also offers a different kind of experience, from walking among the dunes to searching for desert-adapted elephants and watching wildlife gather around Etosha’s waterholes.
There is plenty of variety without trying to pack every major attraction in Namibia into one trip.
The pace allows time at the lodges as well as time in the field, which can be particularly valuable when travelling with children or across generations.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Windhoek to Sossusvlei
Arrive at Hosea Kutako International Airport, where you will be met by a Petnah Africa Tours representative and briefed about the journey ahead.
You then connect with your scheduled light aircraft flight towards the Namib Desert.
From the air, the changing landscape provides an impressive introduction to Namibia, with views across the central highlands, desert and escarpment.
On arrival at the local airstrip, you will be met and transferred to Little Kulala. After checking in, settle into the lodge and enjoy the surrounding desert landscape at your own pace.
For families, the first afternoon is intentionally unhurried.
There is time to relax after the journey, enjoy the lodge facilities, and adjust to the desert environment before the early start the following morning.
Overnight at Little Kulala

Day 2: Sossusvlei
Rise early for breakfast before heading into Namib-Naukluft National Park towards Sossusvlei.
The early start is worthwhile. The dunes change character as the sun rises, with long shadows emphasising their curves and ridgelines.
Your guide will introduce the family to the desert environment, explaining how plants and animals survive in one of the world’s most arid landscapes.
The Sossusvlei area is particularly known for its huge orange-red dunes and the stark contrast of the white clay pans and dead camel thorn trees at Deadvlei.
The surrounding Namib Sand Sea forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its exceptional dune landscapes and fog-influenced desert ecosystem.
Return to the lodge in the early afternoon for lunch and a slower part of the day.
Depending on availability and family interests, there may also be an opportunity to take part in a biking experience around the reserve.
Overnight at Little Kulala

Day 3: Sossusvlei to Damaraland
After breakfast, transfer to the local airstrip for your scheduled light aircraft flight towards Damaraland.
The flight travels northwest via Swakopmund before continuing inland towards the rugged desert landscapes of the region.
On arrival, you will be met and transferred to Doro Nawas for check-in and lunch.
Later, head out on a guided walking experience through the surrounding landscape.
Damaraland is characterised by broad arid plains, rocky valleys and striking geological formations, with vegetation and wildlife adapted to highly variable water availability.
Your guide will introduce the family to the area’s geology, plant life and wildlife while putting the landscape into context.
Walking also changes the pace of a safari, drawing attention to tracks, plants and smaller details that are easy to overlook from a vehicle.
Overnight at Doro Nawas

Day 4: Damaraland
After breakfast, set out by 4×4 along the ephemeral Aba Huab River Valley in search of wildlife, with desert-adapted elephants among the principal attractions.
These elephants are not a separate species.
They are African elephants that have adapted their movements and behaviour to the arid conditions of northwestern Namibia, often travelling considerable distances in search of food and water.
Sightings are never guaranteed, but tracking their movements through the dry river valleys can be one of the most rewarding experiences in Damaraland.
The wider region supports a range of wildlife including gemsbok, springbok, kudu, Hartmann’s mountain zebra and, in some areas, desert-adapted black rhino and other specialised wildlife.
After a picnic lunch, continue to Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its extensive collection of rock engravings associated with ancient hunter-gatherer communities.
The engravings provide a window into earlier relationships between people, wildlife and this difficult landscape.
Return to Doro Nawas for dinner and another night beneath the wide Damaraland sky.
Overnight at Doro Nawas

Day 5: Damaraland to Ongava
After breakfast, transfer to a local airstrip for your scheduled light aircraft flight towards the southern reaches of Etosha National Park.
On arrival, meet your driver-guide and continue to Little Ongava.
After checking in, enjoy some time to settle into the lodge and take in its elevated position overlooking the surrounding reserve.
Etosha is centred around a vast salt pan and is particularly known for wildlife concentrations around water sources during the drier months.
The wider landscape supports species including elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, springbok, oryx and kudu.
Little Ongava also provides access to the private Ongava Reserve, where game drives offer opportunities to encounter wildlife away from the main Etosha tourism circuit.

Day 6: Etosha National Park and Ongava
Today brings your first full day of wildlife viewing around Etosha and Ongava.
Set out on a morning game drive, watching the landscape around the waterholes and open plains for wildlife.
Etosha’s dry-season waterholes can become important gathering points, making patient observation an integral part of the safari experience.
Depending on the day’s programme and conditions, the afternoon can be spent exploring Ongava’s private reserve.
The reserve is particularly known for its rhino conservation work and provides opportunities to see both black and white rhinos.
Return to Little Ongava for lunch and time to relax around the lodge before another afternoon or evening activity.
Overnight at Little Ongava
Meals are as provided by the safari package
Day 7: Ongava Reserve
Enjoy another full day around Ongava, allowing more time for wildlife viewing without having to rush between destinations.
A morning game drive offers another opportunity to look for rhino, lion, elephant and the reserve’s antelope species, as well as the many birds inhabiting the area.
Later, relax at the lodge before heading out again in the afternoon.
Having two full days in the area gives your guide greater flexibility to respond to recent sightings, weather and the family’s interests rather than following a rigid checklist of animals.
Return to Little Ongava for your final evening in Namibia’s northwestern wilderness.
Overnight at Little Ongava
Meals are as provided by the safari package
Day 8: Ongava to Windhoek
Enjoy an early breakfast before transferring to the local airstrip for your scheduled shared light aircraft flight back towards Hosea Kutako International Airport.
Connect with your international flight home, bringing your Namibia family safari to an end.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is Namibia suitable for a family safari?
Yes. Namibia can work particularly well for families who want a combination of wildlife, landscapes and comfortable accommodation rather than a safari focused entirely on game viewing. This itinerary also uses light aircraft connections to reduce some of the longer road journeys.
2. Will we see desert-adapted elephants in Damaraland?
They are one of the region’s best-known wildlife attractions, but sightings cannot be guaranteed. Your guides will look for recent signs and movements and adapt the day’s route accordingly.
3. What can children do at Sossusvlei?
The dunes provide a very different safari experience from a conventional game drive. Families can walk through the dune environment, photograph the changing landscape and learn how organisms survive in an extremely dry environment. Specific activities depend on the lodge, guide, and children’s ages.
4. Can we see rhinos at Ongava?
Ongava is well known for its rhino conservation work and offers opportunities to see both black and white rhinos. Sightings are naturally dependent on wildlife movements and conditions.
5. Is this itinerary suitable for younger children?
The overall route is designed around comfortable accommodation, shorter regional transfers by air and varied experiences.
However, some activities, particularly walking safaris and certain wildlife activities, have age and safety requirements that should be confirmed when booking.
