7 Days Tanzania wildebeest great migration safari is a wildebeest great migration safari designed specifically for you to increase your chances of witnessing the great wildebeest migration and it takes place in Serengeti national park.

The great Wildebeest migration is one of a kind occurrence noted to be the largest migration of wildlife in the whole world, over 2 million wildebeests and ten thousands of Thomson and Grant’s gazelles participate in the annual migration following an old map, in the Serengeti – Mara ecosystem as they look for water and green pastures.

7 Days Tanzania wildebeest great migration safari

In Serengeti national park the migration is most pronounced in August through October, in this period the migration heads north out of the Central Serengeti and it splits into two routes. The main herd/ group heads in to the western corridor crossing the Grumenti river in spectacular stampedes, while at the river enormous Nile crocodiles wait patiently to snatch wildebeests as they surge to cross. After crossing the Grumenti River, they make another river crossing at the Mara River so as to reach Maasai Mara national reserve in Kenya.

Witnessing the wildebeest great migration – this itinerary is designed to offer you high chances of seeing the migration and it takes you to areas of Lobo area (north of the central Serengeti national park) and Wagakuria area (remote northern Serengeti region) where the majority of the wildebeest migration can be found from August to October.

You will also visit Ngorongoro Conservation area a famous safari spot for hosting the world’s largest intact caldera.

Detailed itinerary of 7 Days Tanzania wildebeest great migration safari

Day 01:  Arrival – Arusha

Upon arrival in Tanzania at Kilimanjaro International Airport in Arusha, you will be warmly welcomed by a safari – guide – a representative of Petnah Africa Tours & Travel and transfer to your hotel in Arusha for dinner and overnight.

Day 02:  Arusha – Ngorongoro

You will have early breakfast and then depart for Ngorongoro Conservation Area the world’s 8th wonder, from Arusha it is a drive approximately 4 hours to Ngorongoro. You will arrive in time for lunch at the lodge after checking then, then go for an afternoon game drive at the crater floor. You will descend 600 meters to the crater searching for animals, the crater floor inhabits a variety of animals including herds of wildebeests, zebras, cape buffaloes, elands, warthogs, jackals, cheetahs, elusive leopards among others which you will enjoy watching.

On the same game drive, you will also visit Lake Magadi – a large shallow alkaline lake situated in the south western corner of the crater. The lake is one of the main features in the crater and hosts a large number of flamingoes, hippos and other water birds such as cormorants which you will enjoy watching.  At Exactly 6 pm, you will drive back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 03: Ngorongoro – Serengeti (Central Seronera)

After enjoying breakfast, you will checkout of the lodge and transfer to Serengeti national park – the heart of wild Africa with endless plains and abundance of wildlife including the big Five, predators and hosts the wildebeest great migration. You walk proceed to north region of the park “Lobo Area” which is situated just north of the Seronera area, central Serengeti.

The great wildebeest migration which is the highlight of this safari normally passes through the Lobo Area at around July – August while on their en-route to Maasai Mara national reserve in Kenya.

You will arrive at your lodge in time for lunch then go for an afternoon game drive in the endless plains of Lobo area, you will enjoy watching herds of wildebeests on their journey and large numbers of predators following the large herds to hunt.

Day 04: Serengeti (Seronera Area)

You will have breakfast and then head to the Seronera Area for a full day game drive with packed lunch, Seronera Area is the central region of Serengeti national park and is situated around Lobo and the Grumeti Area. This area attracts a huge population of game throughout the year, during the game drive you will have a chance to enjoy watching non-migrating animals such as elephant, buffalo, gazelle, zebra, lion, leopard and cheetah among others.

Seronera Area is one of the breathtaking corners of Serengeti plains with magnificent riverine trees found along the river lines and several species of birds such as kingfishers, fish eagles among others which you will enjoy watching. Later return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 05: Serengeti (Central) – Northern Serengeti (Kogatende Area)

Have early breakfast and head towards the far northern region of Serengeti national park – also known as Wagakuria, we will have en-route game drive from Lobo area to the Wagakuria area. As we head north, you will get good sightings of giraffes, herds of cape buffaloes, elephants among others.

 You will arrive at your lodge in time for lunch and later go for an afternoon game drive in the Wagakuria area, normally the wildebeest migration can be found in this area from August to October depending on rainfall patterns.

Along the stretch of Mara River that creates a boundary between Serengeti national park of Tanzania and Maasai Mara national reserve in Kenya provides the migration with the most difficult obstacle in their annual journey. However it creates the most fascinating and nerve ranking episode of the migration that is the Mara river crossing, later you will return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 06: Northern Serengeti (Kogatende)

You will have early breakfast and head to the Wagakuria area for a full day game drive, the area hosts a huge population of resident wildlife which is exceptionally high in this area of  Serengeti national park with prides of lions numbered to be up to 30.  In the period of August to October, this area turns into a wildlife paradise.

Mara River is the Key feature in this area and at this point you will have an opportunity to see herds crossing the river north and then back south a few days later.

Note: Finding the Mara river crossing is very difficult and witnessing it is a matter of luck, the herds canbe seen next to the river and only to decide to cross or not to cross until a couple of days later. After the sunset, you will head back to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 07: Northern Serengeti (Kogatende) – Arusha

After breakfast, you will checkout of the lodge, depart with en-route game for Kogatende Airstrip for a flight to Arusha  Airport in Arusha Town, upon arrival you will have lunch at the hotel and then be dropped off at the airport for your departure home or to your next adventure.
