Overview

The journey begins in Windhoek and travels south towards the Namib Desert, where Sossusvlei provides the first major landscape of the trip.

Sunrise among the dunes, Deadvlei and Sesriem Canyon offer a concentrated introduction to one of Namibia’s most distinctive environments.

From the desert, the route continues west towards the Atlantic coast and Swakopmund, passing through dramatic mountain passes and arid valleys before reaching the cooler coastal climate.

A visit to Walvis Bay and the Cape Cross seal colony adds a marine dimension to the journey.

The final stage heads inland towards Etosha National Park for two days of wildlife viewing. Here, the landscape changes again, with open plains, waterholes and the enormous Etosha salt pan creating a very different safari environment.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Windhoek to Sossusvlei

Arrive at Hosea Kutako International Airport, where you will be met by a Petnah Africa Tours representative and briefed about your Namibia safari.

From Windhoek, begin the journey south towards Sossusvlei.

The route passes through Spreetshoogte Pass, one of the scenic routes into the Namib, with an opportunity to stop at a viewpoint and take in the changing landscape.

Continue to your lodge and arrive in the afternoon. After lunch, spend the remainder of the day at leisure. Relax around the lodge, take a swim or simply enjoy the views across the surrounding desert.

The following morning brings an early start, so the first evening is intentionally relaxed.

Overnight: Sossusvlei Lodge
Meals: Full board

Day 2: Sossusvlei and Deadvlei

Rise before sunrise and head through Sesriem Gate towards Sossusvlei.

Your first stop is Dune 45, where the early light gradually brings out the deep orange and red tones of the surrounding dunes.

From there, continue towards Deadvlei, the striking white clay pan surrounded by enormous dunes and the remains of ancient camel thorn trees.

For those looking for a more demanding experience, there is the option to climb Big Daddy or another major dune.

The climbs require good fitness and can be physically demanding, particularly as temperatures rise.

Return to the lodge for lunch and a break during the warmer part of the day.

Later, visit Sesriem Canyon before returning to the lodge for dinner and a relaxed evening.

The wider Namib Sand Sea forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its extensive shifting dunes and the unusual ecological adaptations found within this coastal fog desert.

Overnight: Sossusvlei Lodge
Meals: Full board

Day 3: Sossusvlei and Deadvlei

Today the landscape changes from desert dunes to the Atlantic coast.

Leave Sossusvlei and travel west, crossing the Tropic of Capricorn before continuing through the Gaub and Kuiseb passes.

The route passes through some of the starkest terrain in central Namibia, including the dry Kuiseb River landscape.

Continue towards Walvis Bay, where you can stop to view the coastal lagoon and its birdlife before continuing north to Swakopmund.

The town’s architectural character reflects its German colonial history, while its present-day identity is shaped by its coastal setting, tourism and adventure activities.

Spend the evening at leisure after checking in.

Overnight: The Delight Hotel Swakopmund
Meals: Full board

Day 4: Swakopmund and Cape Cross

Begin the day with an excursion north to Cape Cross to see the Cape fur seal colony along the Atlantic coast.

The colony is one of the major wildlife attractions on this section of the Namibian coast, although the size and distribution of the animals naturally vary throughout the year.

Return to Swakopmund and spend the remainder of the day exploring the town. Walk through the streets, browse local shops and the open-air curio market, or visit the museum and Namibian National Marine Aquarium.

Several optional activities can also be arranged depending on your interests.

These may include boat excursions, scenic flights, fishing, quad biking and skydiving. Speak with your Petnah Africa Tours travel designer when planning your preferred activities.

Overnight: The Delight Hotel Swakopmund
Meals: Full board

Day 5: Swakopmund to Etosha National Park

After breakfast, meet your guide and begin the long drive inland towards Etosha National Park.

There will be opportunities to stop along the way for refreshments and other necessities before continuing towards your lodge.

After lunch, head into the park for your first game drive.

Etosha’s wildlife viewing is strongly influenced by the availability and location of water, particularly during drier periods, so your guide will adjust the route according to conditions and recent sightings.

Look out for elephants, rhino, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, springbok, oryx, kudu, and other wildlife as you travel through the park.

Return to the lodge before sunset for dinner and an evening overlooking the surrounding landscape.

Overnight: Safarihoek Lodge
Meals: Full board

Day 6: Etosha National Park

Today is dedicated to wildlife viewing in Etosha National Park.

Set out early for a full-day game drive, visiting different areas of the park and stopping at waterholes where wildlife may gather.

The enormous Etosha salt pan is one of the defining features of the landscape, stretching across the centre of the park and creating a stark contrast with the surrounding bush and grasslands.

Depending on conditions and recent sightings, you may encounter elephants, lions, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, springbok, oryx, kudu, Damara dik-dik and other species.

Birdlife also adds another dimension to the safari, particularly around water and during periods of seasonal abundance.

Return to Safarihoek Lodge for your final evening in the Etosha region.

Overnight: Safarihoek Lodge
Meals: Full board

Day 7: Etosha to Windhoek

After breakfast, bid farewell to the lodge and begin the drive back towards Windhoek.

The journey passes through towns and rural landscapes before reaching Okahandja, where you can stop at the town’s well-known woodcarving market.

The market provides an opportunity to browse locally produced carvings and other crafts while supporting the artists and cooperatives selling their work.

Continue to Windhoek, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening. Depending on your onward travel arrangements, your driver-guide will drop you at your hotel or at the airport.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is seven days enough to see Namibia’s highlights?

Seven days is enough to create a focused route through some of Namibia’s best-known landscapes and wildlife areas, but it does require relatively long road transfers.

This itinerary prioritises Sossusvlei, Swakopmund and Etosha rather than attempting to cover the entire country.

2. What is the best time of day to visit Sossusvlei?

Early morning is generally the most rewarding time for the dunes, particularly for softer light and cooler temperatures. It also makes the demanding dune climbs more manageable than later in the day.

3. Can I climb Big Daddy?

The itinerary allows for an optional climb, but Big Daddy is a demanding dune and requires reasonable fitness. Travellers who prefer a less strenuous experience can enjoy the dunes and Deadvlei without completing the full climb.

4. What wildlife can I see in Etosha?

Etosha supports elephants, rhinos, lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and several antelope species, among many others. Sightings depend on season, water availability, and normal wildlife movements, so no particular animal encounter can be guaranteed.

5. What can I do in Swakopmund?

Swakopmund works well as a base for both relaxed sightseeing and adventure activities. Depending on availability, options include boat excursions, fishing, quad biking, scenic flights, horse riding and skydiving.
