Detailed Itinerary of 5 Days South Africa – Kruger Safari

Day 1: Arrival at O.R Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg – Drive to Mbombela (Nelspruit)

On arrival in Johannesburg at O.R Tambo International Airport – the biggest and busiest airport in Africa, you will be warmly welcomed by our representative and after a short briefing about the safari and what to expect, embark on a journey to Mbombela – Nelspruit. The journey its self is an adventure and you may decide to have several stops to soak it all in.

A great pit stop is at Milly’s Café on the N4-famous for its extensive lunch menu, fresh bakes, barista coffee and lovely vistas over the trout-filled dam. Once in Mbombella, check in at your lodge,unwind and enjoy a relaxing evening with a traditional South African braai to set you in mood for safari.

Day 2 – 4 Kruger National Park

These days are spent exploring the iconic Kruger National Park. If you want a jam-packed wildlife experience, then Kruger National Park will make your dream come true. This incredible park is said to have the highest chance of seeing the famous Africa’s Big Five plus the Avian six (six endemic and funny-looking bird species – only found in Kruger in one day).

Keep in mind that Kruger is massive, with no less than a whopping 2 million hectares, this is the largest and most famous national park in South Africa, with almost 150 different mammal species and 500 bird species. Also, you can visit archaeological sites, learn about Kruger’s amazing and turbulent history and check out the wildlife rehabilitation centres.

Drive from Mbombela (Nelspruit) to Kruger National Park – Malelane Gate.

From Mbombela, it is just 66 kilometers or a one – hour drive along the N4 to reach Kruger’s Malelane Gate. This southern entrance is one of the busier gates to the park, which means there might be a bit of a jam going in. it leads to the heart of the original reserve established in 1902 to protect wildlife, and when entering, you will receive a map with clearly signposted routes leading to rest camps and top game viewing spots. Make sure to chat with your driver-guide for stop, they often know where the action is.

Day 5: Drive back to Johannesburg – Departure Flight

Your Kruger safari comes to an end today. After three thrilling days of exploring Kruger National Park and incredible wildlife sightings, it is time to head back to O.R Tambo International Airport – a drive of 5 hour drive excluding stops or 430 kilometers from Paul Kruger Gate via the N4 and N12 highways.

In case you need coffee, make a well-deserved pitstop at Alzu Petroport, just past Middleburg on the N4, where you can enjoy a barista special or a hearty meal while watching buffaloes and rhinos roam just metres away. This is the perfect place to stretch your legs, refuel and take in one last bit of bush magic. From here, it is a journey of 175 kilometers to the airport for your flight back home.
