The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the most sought-after experiences for wildlife and nature enthusiasts, the migration is an ever-moving circular migration of over a million animals across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.
The Great Migration is the largest herd movement of animals on the planet, with over 1,000 animals per km² the great columns of wildebeests can be seen from space. The numbers of the herds are astonishing, over 1.2 million wildebeests and 300,000 zebras along with topi and other gazelles move in a constant cycle through the Serengeti – Mara ecosystem in search for grass and water. Guided by survival instinct, each wildebeest will cover 800 to 1,000 km on its individual journey along age-old migration routes. The herds are constantly followed by hungry predators including lions, leopards, cheetah, hyena, wild dogs and crocodiles which make sure the strongest survive in this natural spectacle.
In Serengeti, the resident wildlife numbers are exceptionally high in the Wagakuria area, with prides of lion up to strong, however from August to October turns into a wildlife paradise. The key feature is the Mara River and it is not uncommon to see the herds cross the Mara River north on one day and then back south a few days later.
Note: To actually find a crossing is very difficult and is sometimes a matter of luck
