Murchison Falls National Park is the largest wildlife conservation area in Uganda and is the only park where one can spot all the Big 5 with a visit to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for rhinos, the park is situated approximately 305 kilometers away from Kampala City by road.

Murchison Falls National Park consists of savannah grasslands, woodlands and Riverine forest hosting 76 species of mammals and 451 recorded species of birds. The park is part of the wider Murchison Falls Conservation Area.

River Nile passes through the park leaving behind the Murchison Falls (from which the park derives its name), Murchison Falls – the world’s most powerful falls is a key attraction in the park and is formed as the Nile passes through a narrow gorge before forming several rapids leading to a final thunderous fall.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Pickup – Visit the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary – Continue to Murchison Falls National Park

To start your safari, our Guide/Driver will pick you up from the airport or your hotel in Entebbe/Kampala. He will brief you about the safari before starting the journey to the Murchison Falls National Park, along the journey you will observe the African countryside and small towns like Luwero and Nakasongola where you will see large herds of long horned cattle grazing close to the roadside.

You can also have a short stop at one of the market so that you can mingle with the locals and checkout some of the tasty local fruits like mangoes, oranges, pineapples, bananas and maize.

You will have a stop at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for rhino tracking, this sanctuary was established to protect the few remaining white rhinos in Uganda after 99% were killed by poachers. Once rhinos roamed the national parks in Uganda but due to extensive poaching, they were wiped out and they were killed for their valuable horns.

You will join other travelers at the park headquarters for briefing, then head to the starting point with a ranger guide, then start looking for rhinos. You will spend a reasonable amount of time while watching them and take pictures, afterwards you will proceed to have lunch at the nearby Masindi town.

 Then proceed to Murchison Falls National Park and proceed straight to the top of the falls, spend some time marveling at the magnificent waterfall. The falls are formed when the river Nile squeezes through a narrow gorge and drops with a thunderous force and take as many photos as possible. Head to your lodge for check-in, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Morning Game Drive and Launch Cruise on the Nile

Wake up early, take breakfast and prepare for a very eventful day. The driver-guide will pick you up and take you for a game drive to see lions, leopards, giraffes, the Uganda Kob, buffaloes, oribi, jackals, elephants, warthogs, jackson’s hartebeests, hyenas among others.

Lookout for morning raisers and predators like leopards and lions returning back to their dens after hunting.

After the four-hour game drive, you will be taken back to the lodge for lunch, refreshments and relaxation as you prepare for the African boat cruise. While on the cruise, you will spot crocodiles, hippos and most of the animals already seen while on your earlier game drive. You will see them drinking water and bathing by the shores of the river, you will also watch several bird species including the Shoebill storks, Goliath heron, hornbills, the yellow billed stork, pelicans, bee-eaters, kingfishers, Egyptian goose and African fish eagles.

The boat cruise ends at the bottom of the Murchison Falls and is a great experience to take some great photos for memory.

Day 3: Boat ride at the Nile delta and afternoon Game drive.

Wake up early and enjoy breakfast as you wait for the guide and head for another 4-hour boat ride to the Nile Delta area, this area is known for its amazing collection of wildlife including lions, bushbucks, elephants and buffaloes. The boat goes down stream where you will encounter amazing wildlife and birds, pass through the vast swamps and wetlands with countless water birds. After the boat cruise, you will return to the lodge for lunch and then go for another game drive but this time in a different section of the park. This game drive will give you a chance to see any wildlife you might have missed out during their first game drive and boat rides.

Day 4: Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo forest – transfer back to Kampala

Wake up early and go for briefing at the forest offices, be allocated a group to trek and a ranger to be your leader. Chimpanzee tracking in Budongo Forest can take up to 5 hours and you are allowed only one hour with them.

Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest is special because it has less crowds and there are higher chances of interacting with international researchers for more information about the primates. Also, Budongo Forest is one of the best places for birding in Uganda and while tracking lookout for several birds.

After the experience, you will embark on a journey back to Kampala with lunch on your way in Masindi or Luwero Town back. You will be dropped off either at your hotel or at the airport for your flight back home.
